-아/어하다 + -고 있다
describe an ongoing observable emotional state
Form
Emotion adjective + -아/어하다 → verb; then + -고 있다. Here: 혼란스럽다 → 혼란스러워하다 → 혼란스러워하고 있다.
Function
-고 있다 is attached here to a verb, not directly to the adjective 혼란스럽다. -아/어하다 turns the emotional state into an externally observable reaction/experience of another person; -고 있다 marks that observable state as ongoing.
Why this form?
혼란스러워요 — “I am / you are confused”: directly describes the person’s state, especially natural when speaking about oneself or addressing the experiencer; 혼란스러워하다 is particularly useful for describing an emotion observed in third parties.
혼란스러워해요 — “they seem/show themselves to be confused”: already describes the observable reaction, without specifically highlighting its ongoing duration; 혼란스러워하고 있어요 emphasizes that it is continuing now.
혼란스러운 상태예요 — “they are in a confused state”: describes the state nominally and statically, without the behavioral perspective of -아/어하다.
How to build it
With many psychological adjectives, -아/어하다 forms a verb of observed reaction: 무섭다 → 무서워하다, 슬프다 → 슬퍼하다, 혼란스럽다 → 혼란스러워하다.
