도 (dans V-기도 전에)
add an “even” meaning before an unrealized action
Form
V-기 + 도 + 전에 → V-기도 전에, “before even V-ing.” The annotation targets 도.
Function
도 adds the meaning “even.” 말하기 전에 simply means “before speaking”; 말하기도 전에 means “before I even spoke / before I even had a chance to speak,” with an expectation being preempted.
Why this form?
-기 전에 — “before doing…”: only establishes temporal order. -기도 전에 — “before even doing…”: highlights that the second event happens earlier than normally expected, before the first action actually takes place.
How to build it
The verb is nominalized with -기, then 도 attaches before 전에: 말하다 → 말하기 → 말하기도 전에.
