Vocabulary

처하다

be in, be faced with a situation

Meaning

처하다: “be in / be faced with” a situation, often one that is difficult, unusual, or important.

Why this form?

놓이다 — “be placed / find oneself”: 상황에 놓이다 is also natural and more strongly presents someone as being placed in a situation; 처하다 is a more compact and often somewhat formal way to say “be faced with / be in.”
맞닥뜨리다 — “come face to face with / encounter suddenly”: focuses on the moment of encountering a difficulty; 처하다 describes being already in the situation.

Natural usage

Very common with 상황, 처지, 위기, 곤경: 어려운 상황에 처하다, 위기에 처하다.
