Grammar

-기를 바라다

to hope that something happens

Form

Verb stem + -기를 바라다 — “to hope that…”, “to wish that…”.

Function

Turns an action into something desired. The wish does not mean the action has already happened.

Why this form?

-았/었으면 좋겠다 — “I wish / it would be nice if…”: frames a hoped-for ideal situation.

-고 싶다 — “to want to do”: chiefly a subject’s desire to perform their own action.

How to build it

The written -기를 may contract to -길: 말해 주시기를 → 말해 주시길.
