Grammar

N-인데요?

to ask for clarification about something

Form

Interrogative nominal + -(인)데요? — “which / what exactly?” depending on the word.

Function

The ending -ㄴ/은데요? can prompt an explanation by implying information is missing; nouns use -(인)데요.

Why this form?

N-이에요/예요? — “is it…?”: direct identification question without setting up a point needing clarification.

N-(이)죠? — “it’s …, right?”: tends to seek confirmation of an assumption.

Forms not to confuse

  1. N-이에요/예요?

그게 뭐예요? — What is that?

  1. N-(이)죠?

이게 문제죠? — This is the problem, right?

Examples

뭔데요? — What is it, then?

그게 무슨 일인데요? — What is that about, then?
