Grammar

-지는 않다 / -지는 못하다

contrastive negation

Form

Verb/adjective + -지는 않다 or -지는 못하다 (contracted -진): “not … (though …)” / “cannot … (though …)”.

Function

The particle 는 highlights the negated point as a contrastive topic, sometimes implying another point remains true.

Why this form?

-지 않다 — “not”: neutral negation without explicitly marking contrast.

-지 못하다 — “cannot”: inability without mandatory contrast.

Useful conjugations

보다 → 보지는 않다 → 보진 않다 ; 먹다 → 먹지는 못하다 → 먹진 못하다. 는 contracts to ㄴ after 지.

Forms not to confuse
