Grammar

부사 + 보이다

appear a certain way

Form

Manner adverb + 보이다: “seem / appear [a certain way].” Some -적이다 adjectives form an adverb in -적으로 (사교적이다 → 사교적으로).

Function

Describes the outward impression made by a person, thing, or behavior. Adverb formation depends on the base word: -적으로 is not freely attachable to all adjectives.

Why this form?

-아/어 보이다 — “look…”: a common pattern attached directly to descriptive adjectives, without first forming a -적으로 adverb.

How to build it

With some -적이다 adjectives: 사교적이다 → 사교적으로 → 사교적으로 보이다. Ordinary descriptive adjectives commonly take -아/어 보이다 (예쁘다 → 예뻐 보이다). Distinguish noun + -(으)로 보이다 (“be perceived as”).

Forms not to confuse

-아/어 보이다

그는 행복해 보여요. — He looks happy.

Examples

호석은 활기차고 사교적으로 보인다. — Hoseok seems energetic and sociable.

그는 매우 적극적으로 보여요. — He seems very proactive.
